This post is for the #teamnoexcuses! I'm going to talk about fitness exercises you can do WITH your little one(s). I figured out real quick once Harlie was born that the time she slept wasn't always the best time for me to sleep but instead get stuff done around the house or simple things like a nice shower without having to rush. This was also the time I tried doing my home workouts while on maternity leave and sometimes only got 10 minutes worth in so I had to find a solution. I've put together some quick and easy workouts you can do while either holding your baby for added weight, or intermittently using them.
This is an easy way to include your little one and also get in a quick, but effective workout. Squats, lunges, glute bridge (pictured above), side kicks, and more. These can be done by putting your baby in your carrier (Ex: Tula, which I have) or holding and pushing them up in the air to add arms into the mix. Be careful when doing something that involves leaning or bending down/over that you don't focus so much on the exercise and let your little one fall out!
Sit Ups: Hold child in front of you while you're on your back, and push them up as you come up for the sit up and then back down to your stomach. Doing it with the extra move adds in some upper body workout, too! Russian Twist: Hold baby in front of you as you are in sit up position with legs out in front of you and knees slightly bent. When you're ready, hold your feet off the ground about 6" and start moving your little one side to side as you "twist" working out your core. Mountain Climbers: This one is pictured above where I have Harlie laying underneath me as I am in plank position. Basically you are going to "run in place" but with your legs only as your arms stay put. This is a core and lower body exercise. Harlie loves it because I'm face to face and can make silly noises at her.
3. TOTAL BODY/CARDIO
So this one is best with a stroller in my opinion. I've done several of these with Harlie and think they did great! Of course you have the obvious- running or walking while pushing stroller. But then you've also got walking lunges, one leg booty kicks, push squats, leg lifts (one side at a time), and more.. Another way that you can burn some extra calories is to do your regular house chores while baby wearing. Sometimes if I know I'm not going to make it to boot camp that day or just have some spare energy, I'll put Harlie in our carrier and do the laundry, vacuum (which she loves to be apart of, lol!), or other chores and not feel so bad about not working out for the day.
Using your little one not only helps by pass the time, but also helps you two to spend time together. Sooner than later, they will catch on once they can walk and may even want to join in. This is a great way to show your children that exercise is important to stay healthy but not that its all about body image. *Be on the lookout for my upcoming YouTube channel with videos ranging from fitness to beauty tutorials!*
